STUDENTS at First Melissa

Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. - 1 Timothy 4:12

In Paul's first letter to Timothy, we see the importance of youth. Timothy joined Paul in world-changing ministry only a few years after being saved as a teenager! After years of learning from Paul, ministering to many people in various cities, and growing in his faith, Timothy would become a pastor at the church in Ephesus. We see the same monumental potential in the teenagers of today.

First Melissa Students is where students (grades 6 through 12) can hear the true Gospel of Jesus told in a real and exciting way. We offer times every week for students to gather in community, have some fun, eat some food, join in worship, hear the Word, and discuss what God's Word means for their lives. Our team of selfless volunteers help make our events the best they can be by engaging students in discussion, leading by example, and keeping our students safe.

We know the world is loud and full of opinions, half-truths, and outright lies. We want to be a calm in the storm, a lighthouse in the darkness, and a place where students hear the truth of Jesus' love for them. We look forward to seeing your students as we seek to disciple the leaders of tomorrow!

Summer Camp is the highlight of the year for many of our students and with good reason! Baptism

Baptism is a symbolic portrayal of us burying our old selves and being raised to new life in Christ. Just as little children can come to a saving knowledge of Jesus, they can also understand baptism. What would a child understand from reading the story of the baptism of Jesus? Luke 3:22 tells us that Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. The Holy Spirit descended upon Him “in bodily form like a dove,” and a voice came from heaven saying, “This is my Son with whom I am well pleased.” A child can understand from this story that God was pleased with the baptism of Jesus and make the decision that they want to do the same.

We explain to children that baptism is an opportunity to express to others the faith they have placed in Jesus and that it is a symbol of that faith but not a requirement for salvation.

Just as each child as unique, each time a person comes to faith in Jesus is unique. If a child can communicate the simple truths about salvation and baptism, then we praise God for His work in their young lives. First Melissa does not set a pre-determined age to which a child can be baptized because we do not presume to tell God at what age He can begin His work in the hearts of his children.
